Literacy Program in Dangriga Belize

Pensacola North Rotary Literacy Program is in full swing

The Cantonment club provided a timely boost to Pensacola North Rotary's early literacy effort in Belize that began July 2025.

Two members of A.G. Deb Hild's family carried the equivalent of a pallet of books to Belize City, where they were picked up by Dangriga Club members for distribution. Lead Peace Corps Volunteer, and now a teacher in the Belize school system, Jessica Hillegas, informed us that seven more schools benefited from this latest delivery. Three pallets have arrived in Belize to date now, and the impact, as seen in the following pictures, is dynamic. District clubs can contribute to this literacy effort and help themselves reach Presidential Citation levels. Belize is located just a few hundred miles from our shores, and a flight to Belize City from Atlanta is a mere 2 1/2 hours.

Rotary and the Peace Corps have expanded their collaboration.

Most developing countries have Peace Corps Volunteers. That means Rotary clubs throughout the U.S. have Peace Corps volunteers from their local areas. These clubs rarely know about their local PCVs and where they are located. Connecting clubs with their local PCVs could provide an incentive for these clubs to support the projects in the areas of the world where their Peace Corps Volunteers are serving. District 6940 already has benefited from this collaboration. Contact PDG Leon Hirsh for more information. Leon and Carl Dickerson are available to present programs for your clubs on this valuable endeavor.

A 'Thank You' Letter

Warm Rotary greetings.

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Dangriga, I am pleased to inform you that the reading books you so generously donated have been successfully delivered to all selected primary schools in the Stann Creek District.

The principals, teachers, and especially the students were deeply grateful and excited to receive the books. Your contribution is already making a meaningful impact by strengthening literacy, encouraging a love for reading, and expanding the learning resources available to these young minds.

We believe that access to books is access to opportunity. Because of your generosity, hundreds of children now have greater access to stories that will inspire imagination, confidence, and academic growth.

Thank you once again for your kindness, partnership, and commitment to investing in the future of our children. We are truly grateful for your support.

With appreciation,

Trish Mejia
